Right now I'm passively seeking freelance/project jobs creating web apps, more traditional websites, and photography projects. Between a full-time game programming job, independent contractor web design/development, and web and photography projects for myself and family, I keep pretty busy. However, the right client with the right project can make all the difference.
The type of things I do look for are opportunities where I can work with people who are as excited as I am about creating and providing innovative products and services, while honing my existing technical and workplace skills. I typically look for companies/departments open and/or small enough that my contributions can make a difference and hopefully be critical to the success of the group.
The quickest way contact me about occupation-related issues is at <career@slippyd.com> or e-mail me for additional contact info. Travel (even outside of the USA) is a plus and can be discussed.
I am strongest in software (whether it be web or desktop-based) planning/design and building/development. I have a visual-spatial eye for both graphics and user interfaces and have had plenty of experience (occupational and educational) with project/team-related communication. Also, I have a habit of continuously developing ideas on how to make products I use around me better; frequently this includes things I'm working on and thinking about (regardless of whether it's occupational, educational, or personal).
I excel at working through ideas, solving problems, and figuring out how to design and develop applications, web sites, graphic design projects, research and photography projects, etc. I have team project management experience through previous workplaces and semester projects, in addition to some previous background in customer service and interaction. Working alone on projects is very stimulating to me; I also enjoy working in a team where I can throw out ideas and build on others' ideas. I have the most experience with a combination of both in which I can figure out my ideas for a problem, then present them and talk through them, then work on the solution individually or in small "war rooms".
I am strongest in web design and development with my usual attention to quality and detail and a key focus on using standards while retaining usability and compatibility. I am also experienced in other areas from programming (in many languages and paradigms) to 2-D/3-D graphic design to photo, video, and audio editing to computer repair. I am a quick learner, both with new tools, processes, and languages, and with new ways of thinking and working. My qualifications are detailed further in Accomplishments, Education, and Employment below.
Developing Nintendo DS games for Griptonite Games studio. Used C++ and Nitro libraries; used and helped develop proprietary game libraries. No games released yet.
Developed Ruby on Rails, JavaScript/AJAX, HTML/CSS, and graphics for bonanzle.com online shopping site.
Developed custom dynamic web applications for online housing/meal plan/etc. sign-up & management in PHP/MySQL. Built server-side dynamic image manipulation and caching systems, designed user interfaces for tools for housing/dining administrators, created website graphics and icons, excercized project management, documentation, and collaboration.
biggest project: Planned, designed, developed, and deployed custom simplified XML language for content-only websites including custom CMS engine design, XHTML/CSS/AJAX layout, XSLT transformations, dynamic image resizing/compositing/placement, and management of team (~5 students).
utilized tools for: development (emacs, Eclipse, Linux command line), project management (CVS, Twiki, SubEthaEdit), graphics (Photoshop, the GIMP)
troubleshooting, repairs, and installations (Windows and Mac OS hardware and software), request/hardware tracking, customer service interactions with faculty and staff clients
PHP programming (inc. advertising link parser/inserter, dynamic image galleries), database administration, desktop publishing (photographer directory/index) phone customer support
I redesigned the site (intro and portfolio) starting with a Photoshop mock-up and created the XHTML/CSS, JavaScript/AJAX, and PHP design with a Drupal back-end, built around the client's needs in under 2 weeks (original version at: <http://www.thompson-frater.com/old>).
I helped start and run the Japanese Animation and Film Club at the University of Wisconsin–River Falls for two academic years. I ran meetings, made promotional posters, maintained the mailing lists, and recruited new members to watch, discuss and enjoy anime.
I have maintained a hobby web server (now 2 machines/locations) for more than a few years running web, mail, remote shell, and file services for multiple users and multiple domains. Through remotely maintaining my own server, I have learned many ins and outs of the Linux command line, DNS services, permissions/access privileges, and setup/configuration/maintenance of Apache/PHP/MySQL, Sendmail, CVS/Subversion, dynamic DNS, and Linux in general.
I and my research partner explored developing a video game from scratch using modern tools for visual game development and rapid, collaborative agile development. Development used primarily the Unity engine, Javascript programming with the .NET/Mono API, and 3D/2D graphics work. The game created features a real-time damage calculation and painting system, dynamic level building using controlled random seeds, and pixel-level graphics programming. We used MediaWiki, SubEthaEdit, and CVS for collaboration.
I developed a new kind of semantic network in which relations are represented as normal nodes, which allows complex representational relations; dynamically related relations; and structural, hierarchical, and distinctly instantiated relations.
troubleshooting/fixing school computers; drama club technical director, promotional materials; school newspaper Editor-In-Chief
